Our story began with a single handful of clay.
Skywood Clay Atelier was founded by Maia Ellwood in a small Northern California studio. What started as intimate weekend gatherings quickly grew into a trusted sanctuary for ceramic learning worldwide.
Mission
We offer patient, journal-like guidance that respects the meditative pace of clay. Every class is built to help modern sculptors develop quiet confidence and lasting technical skill.
Approach
We believe great pottery comes from slow observation and repeated touch. Our teaching celebrates process over perfection, encouraging students to keep careful notes and to enjoy the tactile ritual of forming.
The guiding team
Twenty years working stoneware and porcelain. Teaches the signature slow-handbuilding course.
Oversees kiln schedules and the annual summer glaze chemistry series.
Specializes in sculptural vessels and one-weekend intensive sessions.
Studio values
Work slowly, observe deeply
We resist the rush. Every exercise builds awareness of material resistance and time.
Document the process
Students keep journals; notes become invaluable when returning to the wheel or slab.
Respect the fire
Firing is never rushed. We teach temperature curves, cooling cycles, and safe kiln loading.
Community over competition
Our studio is a place to share failures and triumphs. Students often return as teaching assistants.
